CYO (CITYNET Yokohama Project Office)

CITYNET Yokohama Project Office was set up as an organization to provide services in international cooperation projects in 2013 when CITYNET Secretariat was relocated from the City of Yokohama to Seoul Metropolitan Government. Every year projects are conducted with member cities and organizations in topics including Disaster Risk Reduction Education, Disaster Risk Reduction, Education (education in environment and solid waste management).

Background
Official Name : The Regional Network of Local Authorities for the Management of Human Settlements
CITYNET is a non-profit international organization that aims to improve living environments and tackle urban problems. The headquarter office is located in Seoul Metropolitan Government. Starting with 26 members in 1987, CITYNET has grown in 30 years to become an international organization of 162 members (as of December 2023). In 1995, CITYNET was granted consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) at the United Nations. CITYNET was also recognized in 2002 by UN-HABITAT with the Scroll of Honour for “playing a key role in facilitating City to City Cooperation and networking amongst local governments, NGOs and development agencies in Asia.”

1982 | The 1st Regional Congress of Local Authorites for the Development of Human Settlments in the Asia Pacific is held |
1987 | CITYNET is established with the support of UNESCAP, UNDP, UN-HABITAT, and 27 members |
1989 | At the Shanghai Congress , the CITYNET Charter was adopted. UNESCAP undertook the functions of the Secretariat until the official CITYNET Secretariat was established |
1992 | The CITYNET Secretariat was established with the support of the City of Yokohama |
1995 | CITYNET is granted ECOSOC Status of United Nations and the Bangladesh National chapter is established |
1996 | Waste water management project in Colombo, Sri, Lanka begins |

Main activities
The proposal and implementation of projects in international cooperation
Based on members’ needs, the office contributes to the provision of solutions that our members face in urban challenges, by sharing Japanese cities’ technical knowledge and expertise. In particular, CITYNET Yokohama Project Office (CYO) mostly provided solutions in the field of disaster preparedness, in partnership with Disaster Cluster Lead City Yokohama. Since 2023, Yokohama city has served as the leading city of the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) Cluster of Citynet and CYO has worked together with Yokohama city to achieve SDGs.
Trainings, Site visits, Seminars in Japan
Based on members’ needs, the office implements trainings, site visits and seminars in Japan which incorporate expertise and feedback from the public sector, private sector and communities.
International Publicity
The office disseminates information globally from Yokohama, through various media sources including local media. In addition, networking opportunities are created to develop innovative needs-based programs.
