① Please cooperate in making proper use of ambulances

[Inquiries] Kyūkyū Tantō, Keibō-ka (Emergency Aid Subdivision, Fire Suppression Division),

Naka Fire Station Tel/fax: 045-251-0119

Yokohama City currently has a fleet of 83 ambulances in operation.
Even with this many ambulances, there are times when there are not enough. In particular, Naka Fire Station’s ambulance team has the highest number of calls in the city. Only call an ambulance in an emergency. Please remember this principle.

Ambulances are a limited medical resource

Do not use an ambulance “just in case” if there is no emergency!
In such cases, please visit a hospital by yourself.
Past examples of inappropriate reasons for calling an ambulance:
  × Because my sunburn hurts
× Because I’m going to be hospitalized today
  × Because I can’t stop hiccupping
× Because I’ve run out of the medicine I received at the hospital
× Because I’m worried about whether I have COVID-19, even though I don’t have any serious symptoms
× Because I’m not seriously injured, but want to see a doctor just to be on the safe side

If you are not sure whether to call an ambulance

・A specialist will advise you on whether you should call an ambulance or go to a hospital immediately.
・You will be referred to a hospital or clinic that will see you.

➁ Don’t overlook frailty: Increase your healthy life expectancy!

[Inquiries] Kōreisha Shien Tantō (Elderly Support Subdivision),

Frailty begins with a small change. If a person refrains from going out, his or her legs and back become weak and it becomes difficult to move around, or if he or she has fewer opportunities to talk to others, it becomes difficult to speak, etc. A chain of decline in physical strength, energy, and cognitive function can threaten health. Once a person is in need of nursing care, it is difficult to return to a healthy state, but it is possible to return from frailty to healthy by changing one’s daily activities.
Let’s aim for a long and healthy life by adjusting our lifestyle.
*Frailty
Frailty refers to the state between “healthy” and “in need of nursing care.”
*Healthy life expectancy
The period of time during which a person can live without being limited in daily life by health problems.

The sooner frailty is recognized, prevented, and remedied, the sooner you can expect a return to good health!

Four key points for preventing and improving frailty

Exercise

To maintain physical strength and muscle power, be conscious of moving your body in your daily life.
・Take the stairs instead of the elevator
・Go shopping at a supermarket a little farther away
・Try simple exercises (radio calisthenics, Hamatore(Japanese))at home

Oral functions

A decline in oral functions is known as “oral frailty” and can lead to decline throughout the body. Be sure to take care of your mouth on a regular basis.
 ・Brush your teeth after meals
・Have your oral health checked regularly by your dentist
・Mouth exercises are also recommended to prevent muscle weakness around the mouth, which can help prevent aspiration

Patakara exercises

Aim for 2 sets of 8 repetitions
Flick your lips and say
Pa pa pa pa Pa pa pa pa
Place the back of your tongue on the back of your upper jaw and say
Ka ka ka ka Ka ka ka ka
Place the top of your tongue behind your front teeth and say
Ta ta ta ta Ta ta ta ta
Roll your tongue and say
Ra ra ra ra Ra ra ra ra

Nutrition

Eat a combination of staple, main and side dishes.
People tend to be deficient in protein, which is the source of muscle mass.
Make a conscious effort to eat foods that contain protein, such as fish, meat, eggs, and tofu.

Social participation

Losing social connections is the gateway to frailty. Make small errands, get out at least once a day, and engage in activities that are fun and rewarding!

A variety of activities to prevent and improve frailty are being conducted in the community.
